For most beginners the Audio-Technica AT-LP60X is the simplest start: fully automatic, belt-drive, with a built-in switchable preamp. Choose the Sony PS-LX310BT if you want Bluetooth output, the Fluance RT80 if you prefer a manual deck with a wooden cabinet and a replaceable-stylus Audio-Technica cartridge, and the AT-LP120XUSB if you want a direct-drive manual deck with 78 RPM and USB output.
How we compared them
We have not lab-tested sound quality, so we do not rank turntables by how they sound. This comparison uses each maker’s published specifications, which anyone can check, and matches them to the kind of listener each deck suits. All four have a built-in phono preamp, so they can feed powered speakers directly.
| Model | Drive | Operation | Speeds | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audio-Technica AT-LP60X | Belt | Fully automatic | 33-1/3, 45 | Switchable preamp; replaceable stylus |
| Sony PS-LX310BT | Belt | Fully automatic | 33-1/3, 45 | Bluetooth output; USB Type-B; preamp gain Low/Mid/High |
| Fluance RT80 | Belt | Manual with auto-stop | 33-1/3, 45 | Audio-Technica AT91 cartridge; switchable preamp; MDF cabinet |
| Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB | Direct | Fully manual | 33-1/3, 45, 78 | Switchable preamp; USB output |
The four turntables
Audio-Technica AT-LP60X turntable
Best for: pressing start and listening. It is a fully automatic belt-drive deck with a DC servo-controlled motor and an aluminium platter. The built-in preamp switches between PHONO and LINE, and the cartridge is a VM type with a replaceable stylus.
Sony PS-LX310BT turntable
Best for: wireless speakers and headphones. Sony’s deck is fully automatic and belt-driven, with a die-cast aluminium platter, an MM cartridge, a built-in preamp with three gain settings and Bluetooth output. It also has a USB Type-B output. Its headshell is not exchangeable.
Fluance RT80 turntable
Best for: a classic look and an upgrade path. Fluance lists a belt-drive deck with an MDF cabinet, a 12-inch aluminium platter, an Audio-Technica AT91 moving-magnet cartridge with a 0.6 mil conical stylus, and a switchable PHONO/LINE preamp. It stops automatically at the end of a side but is not fully automatic, and it does not play 78 RPM records.
Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB turntable
Best for: hands-on listeners and digitising. A fully manual, direct-drive deck with a DC servo motor, a die-cast aluminium platter and an electronic brake. It plays 33-1/3, 45 and 78 RPM and has a switchable preamp and a driver-free USB output.
You will also need speakers
None of these decks includes speakers. Powered (active) speakers keep it simple, because the amplifier is built in.
Edifier R1280DBs powered speakers
Edifier’s R1280DBs are active 2.0 bookshelf speakers rated at 42 W RMS in total, with Bluetooth, optical, coaxial and two RCA line inputs plus a remote. They have no phono input, so set your turntable’s preamp switch to LINE and connect it to an RCA input.
Setup in four steps
- Place the deck on a level, stable surface away from the speakers.
- Set the preamp switch: LINE if your speakers or amp have no phono input, PHONO if they do.
- Connect the RCA cable to the matching input and plug in the power adapter.
- Play a record you do not mind replaying. Audio-Technica and Fluance both include a dust cover.
How we pick what to link
We only link a specific listing when it passes automatic checks: the right artist, album and format, in stock, and strong customer feedback from a large number of buyers. If nothing passes, the link goes to an Amazon search instead and we say so in our notes. We do not show prices or star ratings on this site because they change by the hour. Check the current price before you buy.
Quick answers
Do I need a separate phono preamp?
Not with these four decks, since each has a built-in switchable preamp. Use LINE for speakers or an amplifier without a phono input, and PHONO if the amplifier has its own phono stage.
Can I connect a turntable directly to passive speakers?
No. Fluance’s support pages say a turntable cannot be connected directly to passive speakers; they need an amplifier or receiver. Powered speakers avoid that.
Which of these plays 78 RPM records?
Only the AT-LP120XUSB, according to Audio-Technica. The others play 33-1/3 and 45 RPM.
Is there a record player under $200 on this list?
We do not publish prices, and prices change often, so we do not make price-bracket claims here. Check the current price on the listing before you buy.
